Five C.P.R. locomotives in the yards at Chapleau. This picture was taken in 1939. From left to right:

No. 5117, buit in Montreal by C.P.R. and completed in October 1922. At this time it was equipped with 63 inch driving wheels and had 23-1/2 X 32 inch cylinders. Between 1926 and 1930 the engine was enlarged by changing to 32 X 32 inch cylinders and raising the boiler pressure from 180 to 190 pounds. It was originally numbered 5017 and renumbered 5117 when the boiler pressure was changed.

No. 5164, built in Montreal by the Montreal Locomotive Works for the C.P.R. It was completed in September 1913. One will notice the super heater in front of the stack on engines 5184 and 5194. This was called a bow-tie. This engine was the only one on the C.P. Railway that was equipped with a Coffin Feed water heater instead of the famed bow-tie type. This arrangement was something like a long peaked baseball cap (side view) that was across the front top part of the boiler casing in which the super heating equipment which heated the water before it entered the boiler was located. One will notice the square topped headlights because of this projection.

No. 5184, built in Montreal by the Montreal Locomotive Works and completed in September 1913 for the C.P.R. It is the same sort of engine as 5164 except that it had a bow-tie super heater and a stoker. Originally numbered 5084, it was renumbered 5184 when the boiler pressure was raised and the cylinders changed between 1926 and 1930.

No. 2551, built by the C.P.R. at Angus Shops in Montreal and completed inFebruary 1909. It was originally numbered 1201. In 1910 it was renumbered 1151 and was again renumbered 2551 in 1912. It was a G2s type locomotive equipped with 21 X 38 inch cylinders and 69 inch driving wheels. In 1940 it was transferred from Chapleau to the Dominion Atlantic Railway at Kentville, Nova Scotia and remained there until replaced by diesels in 1959 when it was returened to Montreal and scrapped.

No. 5194, same as 5184 but originally numbered 5094 when it was completed by the Montreal Locomotive Works for the C.P.R. in October 1913. It has the same history as 5184. Changed to 5194 when the boiler pressure was raised between 1926 and 1930.
